The Business of Legislation--Part I

 

 Strategic Intention and Outcome for the Session:

This class is designed to help position you as a strategic business partner in organizations by increasing your business and legislative acumen.  Focusing on the knowledge, skills and abilities C-suite executives require in true business partners, this class will identify legislative tools you will need to succeed in the role of strategic advisor to the management team.  Additionally, you will be introduced to legislative analysis concepts and processes that will enable you to present information to management and Legislators in meaningful ways.

 
As a result of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the business and legislative skills needed to be an effective human resource business partner
  • Recognize the most common legislative information and methods used in business today
  • Understand the tools available to professionals to monitor the legislative process and not only keep their organization in compliance, but to ultimately have an impact on the process and the passage of the legislation and regulations affecting the business’ they represent
  • Create effective communications with legislators
  • Comprehend the role of legislation and its overall impact on business

WHAT DOES THE ARKANSAS SECRETARY OF STATE DO...AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?

Secretary of State Mark Russell Martin (born February 18, 1968) is the Republican Secretary of State of Arkansas, a statewide position which he assumed in January 2011. He is a former three-term member of the Arkansas House of Representatives from District 87 in Washington County in northwestern Arkansas. A native of Kansas City, Kansas, Martin was reared in the Mississippi River delta country of eastern Arkansas. He graduated from Hughes High School in Hughes in St. Francis County. In 1998, he received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. While in the United States Navy, Martin was a nuclear engineering laboratory technician. He since held numerous technology-oriented positions in private industry prior to the launching of his political career. Martin and his wife, the former Sharon Marie Tilley (also born 1968), have two daughters and one son. The family attends Legacy Baptist Church of Northwest Arkansas in Rogers. The Martins reside in Prairie Grove in Washington County though his duties often keep him in the capital city of Little Rock.
