HR Equipping Managers to Be Winning Coaches

By Tony Hawk, MMFT, LMFT

Executive Coach and VP, People, Culture, Performance and Engagement

GrowthWise Group, Bentonville, Arkansas

Introduction:

  • Employee Dissatisfaction at all-time high according to Gallup
  • Employee engagement remains high, even after significant effort to change this.
  • Turnover is costing companies a fortune
  • Realization:  People don’t leave Companies.  They leave managers

What is the Solution?

Equipping Frontline Managers to be Winning Coaches

  • It would seem that to bring a Winning Coach requires a Ph.D. in Business and Psychology.

  • Since that is not happening, HR Can Step Up:  You as an HR Professional, are likely the closest thing the organization has to an industrial psychologist.

Know, Teach, Equip and Instill the Six Things Winning Coaches Do Consistently to Build Wining Teams:

  • Winning Coaches Don’t Play Games, but they Do Win Games!
  • Winning Coaches Inspire with Vision  (focus on the prize)
  • Winning Coaches Love their Players and are Intent about Making Winners out of Them
  • Winning Coaches Instill Discipline and Manage Consequences
  • Winning Coaches Ensure TEAM performance
  • Winning Coaches Develop Capable and Competent People*
    • They know the Seven Psychological Pillars that Make Winners out of Players. From the science of Perceptual Psychology.
    • They know and implement what it takes to build a psychologically safe work environment (Edmonson 1998 HBS)
    • They know the Builder and Barriers to these Pillars.
    • They are Masters at the Art of Using Questions

*Due to time constraints, this single point will be the focal discussion at this HR Chapter Meeting.
